Melbourne Airport to the city

Melbourne's international airport, Tullamarine, is located 25km north-east of the Melbourne Central Business District (CBD).

The SkyBus City Express runs daily from 4am to 1am between the airport and the city (Southern Cross Station), every 10 minutes during peak times (7am and 7pm) and every 15 minutes outside that. Tickets cost about $24.90 one-way or $41.70 for a return trip, and can be purchased online or at the e-kiosks at the designated pickup spots.

There are dedicated Taxi and RideShare pickup points outside the terminals. A trip to Melbourne will be about 30 minutes. Rideshare options in Melbourne include Uber, DiDi and Shebah. If you are travelling with several people, you may find this option better value for money.

Public transport

Melbourne has three types of public transport - bus, tram and train. All can be paid for using Myki; this can be as a physical Myki card or, if you have an Android phone e-Myki in your Google wallet.

Adults will require a full-fare Myki ticket - Myki Money allows you to put money on your card. We don't recommend a Myki Pass unless you're staying longer in Victoria as they start with a weekly rate.

Full-fare Myki fees (as of 13 March 2026) are:

  • 2 hours - $5.70

  • All day, capped at $11.40 Mon-Fri, capped at $8.00 Sat-Sun

You will need to 'tap' your Myki card or e-Myki when you get on AND off a train or bus.

Trams are a special case in Melbourne. If you are ONLY travelling within the Free Tram Zone (FTZ) you do not need to tap on or off as travel by tram in that area is free at all times. If you ARE travelling on a tram in an area that is not covered by the FTZ you will need to tap on and off.

Please note: As of 19 April, the Victorian State Government has just announced that all fares will be half price from June; this includes bus, train and tram rides making your journeys around Melbourne more affordable!

This does not include privately run services like the airport shuttle bus.
